Frequently Asked Questions
What do Form 1099-R Boxes 1, 2a, and 4 mean?
Box 1 is the gross distribution (total paid from the plan or IRA). Box 2a is the taxable amount—if blank or marked “taxable amount not determined,” many people start with Box 1 and refine with their own basis records. Box 4 shows federal income tax already withheld. This tool uses Box 2a when you enter it; otherwise it falls back to Box 1.
What do common distribution codes mean?
Code 7 is a normal distribution (typically age 59½+). Code 1 is an early distribution with no known exception and often triggers an additional 10% tax. Code 2 is early with an exception. Codes 3 and 4 relate to disability and death. Codes G and H often indicate direct rollovers. Always match the code on your form; rules and exceptions are fact-specific.
When does the 10% early withdrawal penalty apply?
Distributions before age 59½ coded as early (often Code 1) may owe an additional 10% tax on the taxable amount, unless an IRS exception applies (for example certain medical, higher-education, or first-home exceptions for IRAs). This estimator can add that 10% when Code 1 is selected—turn the option off if an exception applies. It does not replace Form 5329 calculations.
Is a 1099-R distribution subject to self-employment tax?
No. Pension, IRA, and 401(k) distributions reported on Form 1099-R are not self-employment income. This tool applies ordinary federal income tax brackets (plus optional early-distribution tax) and never the 15.3% SE tax.
Is this official tax advice or are my figures uploaded?
No. This is a planning estimate using approximate 2026 federal brackets and average state rates. Calculations and PDF downloads run entirely in your browser—nothing is uploaded. Confirm with a CPA or tax software before filing.

1099-R Retirement Distribution Tax Estimator: Pensions, IRAs & 401(k)s in 2026
Form 1099-R reports distributions from pensions, annuities, retirement or profit-sharing plans, IRAs, insurance contracts, and similar arrangements. Box 1 shows the gross distribution. Box 2a shows the taxable amount when the payer can determine it. Box 4 lists federal income tax withheld. The distribution code in Box 7 signals whether the payment is a normal distribution, early distribution, disability, death, rollover, or another category.
Retirement distributions are ordinary income for federal tax purposes and are not subject to self-employment tax. Early distributions (often Code 1) may also face an additional 10% tax unless an exception applies. Planning questions include how much of Box 1 is taxable, whether Box 4 withholding covers the federal bill, whether the early-distribution tax applies, and what approximate state tax may apply.
This estimator uses Box 2a when provided (otherwise Box 1), applies approximate 2026 ordinary brackets by filing status, optionally adds a 10% early-distribution tax for Code 1, estimates state tax with an average effective rate (0% in no-income-tax states), and nets Box 4 for federal tax due or refund. Pair it with the 1099-INT, 1099-G, 1099-B, and freelance 1099 tools when your year includes interest, unemployment, brokerage sales, or contractor income.
The free 1099-R Retirement Distribution Tax Estimator runs entirely in your browser with optional PDF download—no uploads and no account. Use it to sketch taxable retirement income, federal due or refund, early-penalty exposure, and effective rate before you file.
