Why do Shopify products need UPC or EAN barcodes?

What is the difference between UPC-A and EAN-13?
UPC-A is the 12-digit North American retail format. EAN-13 is the 13-digit international GTIN. Both use a mod-10 check digit. This tool validates or auto-appends that check digit so scanners accept the code.
Can I use a random barcode for real products?
The random button is for demos, packaging mockups, and internal SKUs (especially Code 128). For retail GTINs sold in stores or on Amazon, you should use numbers licensed from GS1—not random digits.
