Frequently Asked Questions
Who receives Form 1099-INT?
Banks, brokers, credit unions, and other payers generally issue Form 1099-INT when they pay you $10 or more of interest in a year (thresholds and exceptions can vary). You may still need to report interest even if you do not receive a form—keep year-end statements handy.
Is interest income subject to self-employment tax?
No. Ordinary bank and Treasury interest reported on Form 1099-INT is not self-employment income and does not trigger Social Security or Medicare SE tax. This estimator applies ordinary federal income tax brackets only—never SE tax.
Are U.S. savings bond and Treasury interest (Box 3) taxable by my state?
Interest on U.S. Treasury obligations and many U.S. savings bonds is generally taxable for federal purposes but exempt from state and local income tax. This tool treats Box 3 as federally taxable and state-exempt for planning. Confirm special state rules with a tax professional.
How does Box 4 federal withholding affect my estimate?
Box 4 shows federal income tax already withheld on the interest. We subtract that amount from estimated federal income tax to show a balance due (if tax exceeds withholding) or an estimated refund (if withholding exceeds tax). State tax is estimated separately and is not reduced by Box 4.
Is this official tax advice or are my figures uploaded?
No. This is a planning estimate using approximate 2026 federal brackets and average state rates. Calculations and PDF downloads run entirely in your browser—nothing is uploaded. Confirm with a CPA or tax software before filing.

1099-INT Interest Income Tax Estimator: Bank & Treasury Interest in 2026
Form 1099-INT reports interest from banks, brokers, money markets, and many bonds. Box 1 is taxable interest for federal purposes. Box 3 covers interest on U.S. savings bonds and Treasury obligations—usually federally taxable but often free of state income tax. Box 4 shows any federal income tax already withheld.
Unlike 1099-NEC contractor pay or 1099-K marketplace payouts, interest income is not subject to self-employment tax. Your planning question is ordinary income tax: how much federal tax the interest adds after the standard deduction (or stacked with other income), what approximate state tax applies to non-Treasury interest, and whether Box 4 withholding covers the federal bill.
This estimator adds Box 1 and Box 3 for total and federally taxable interest, applies approximate 2026 ordinary brackets by filing status, estimates state tax on Box 1 only using an average effective rate (0% in no-income-tax states), and nets Box 4 to show federal tax due or refund. Pair it with the 1099-B, 1099-NEC, 1099-K, and 1099-MISC tools when your year includes brokerage sales or freelance income.
The free 1099-INT Interest Income Estimator runs entirely in your browser with optional PDF download—no uploads and no account. Use it to sketch total interest, taxable interest, federal due or refund, and effective rate before you file. It is an educational planning tool, not a substitute for professional advice or IRS e-file software.
