Frequently Asked Questions

What is Form 1099-K and when is it issued?

Form 1099-K reports payment card and third-party network transactions—gross payments processed through processors like PayPal, Stripe, Shopify Payments, or marketplace payouts. Issuance thresholds have changed over recent tax years (federal rules and some states differ), so confirm the current IRS and state thresholds for your filing season. Receiving a 1099-K does not by itself mean the full Box 1a amount is taxable profit.

How is 1099-K different from 1099-NEC?

1099-K reports gross payment volume through cards and third-party networks. 1099-NEC reports nonemployee compensation paid directly to contractors (Box 1). Sellers and creators often receive 1099-K from platforms, while freelancers often receive 1099-NEC from clients. Some people receive both—use each form’s boxes carefully and try our 1099-NEC estimator for contractor pay.

Why subtract card processing fees and platform deductions?

Box 1a is typically gross payments before many fees. Your taxable net profit is closer to gross minus ordinary business expenses—including payment processing fees, platform commissions, COGS, software, and other deductible costs. This tool lets you enter card/platform fees separately so seller economics stay visible.

Is this official tax advice or a filing tool?

No. This is a planning estimate only using approximate 2026 federal brackets and average state rates. It does not file returns or replace a CPA, enrolled agent, or tax software.

Are my Shopify, PayPal, or Stripe figures uploaded?

No. Every calculation runs locally in your browser with React client state. Your payment totals never leave your device, and PDF summaries are generated client-side with jsPDF.

1099-K Tax Estimator for US Sellers & Creators: Box 1a, Fees, SE Tax, and Quarterly Set-Asides

If you sell on Shopify, Etsy, Amazon, or get paid through PayPal, Stripe, or other processors, you may receive Form 1099-K reporting payment card and third-party network transactions. Box 1a shows gross payments—not your take-home profit. Planning tax from the gross figure without subtracting fees and expenses is a common reason sellers overestimate April liability—or under-save for quarterly estimates.

Start with 1099-K Box 1a gross payments, subtract card processing fees and platform deductions, then subtract other ordinary business expenses. Apply self-employment tax to roughly 92.35% of net profit at the combined Social Security and Medicare rates (about 15.3%, subject to the wage base and Additional Medicare Tax). Half of SE tax is typically deductible when estimating federal income tax; progressive brackets and your state’s approximate effective rate finish a practical annual sketch.

Because marketplace and processor payouts rarely withhold income tax the way a W-2 employer would, many sellers set aside money each quarter. Dividing remaining annual tax by four is a simple habit; confirm current 1099-K issuance thresholds and safe-harbor rules for your situation. If you also receive Form 1099-NEC for contractor work, pair this tool with the 1099-NEC estimator and the general 1099 Freelance Tax Estimator.

This free 1099-K Payment & Tax Estimator runs entirely in your browser—no uploads, no account, and PDF downloads generated locally. Use it to compare net taxable income, SE tax, income tax, total liability, quarterly due, and effective rate as you adjust fees and expenses. It is an educational planning tool, not a substitute for professional advice or official IRS filing software.
