Frequently Asked Questions

Why is editing PDF metadata in the browser safer than uploading to a website?

Title, author, subject, and keywords often sit alongside confidential report content. Upload-based editors send the whole file to a remote server before changing those fields. This tool loads the PDF with pdf-lib in your browser only — metadata writes and watermark drawing never leave your device, so drafts and contracts don’t create a cloud copy.

How do I control watermark opacity and rotation?

Use the Opacity slider (0.1–1.0) for how strongly the text sits over the page, and the Rotation slider (−90° to 90°) to tilt the watermark (for example −45° for a classic diagonal stamp). Size (10–100) and color presets or a hex value refine the look before you apply and download.

Which PDF metadata fields can I edit?

You can set Title, Author, Subject, and Keywords. Keywords accept a comma-separated list that is written with setKeywords as discrete tags. Empty fields clear or omit the corresponding property on save, depending on what you leave blank before Apply & Download.

Does adding a watermark destroy the existing text layer or hurt readability?

No. Watermarks are drawn as an extra text layer with Helvetica via drawText — they do not flatten or rasterize the underlying page. Tunable opacity keeps body content readable while still marking the document, and original selectable text stays intact underneath.

Watermark PDFs & Edit Metadata Locally — No Cloud Upload Trail

Confidential reports, manuscript drafts, and contract templates often need a visible “INTERNAL” or “DRAFT” stamp — plus clean Title, Author, Subject, and Keywords before distribution. Most online watermark sites require uploading the full file first, which leaves a remote copy of material you may never want on a third-party disk. This PDF Watermark & Metadata Editor never makes that request: pdf-lib loads the document in your browser, writes metadata with setTitle / setAuthor / setSubject / setKeywords, and draws a Helvetica text watermark on every page with tunable size, opacity, rotation, and color.

Because watermarks are an extra drawText layer rather than a flattened image export, the original page content and selectable text stay underneath. Opacity keeps body copy readable while still branding the file for recipients. Empty watermark text lets you update properties alone; encrypted or corrupt PDFs fail with clear errors instead of a silent bad download.
